NXP has a line of RTC (real time clock) chips for automotive applications – they handle the extreme temperature range found in cars from –40°C – 80°C. For those who aren't conversant with the Celsius scale, that's from brrrrr to black car with black leather seats in the tropical sun!

The PCA2129A has some unique features:

  • Temperature compensation over the working range
  • Built-in crystal and caps – no additional parts are required
  • I2C or SPI operation
  • Time stamp event input with two levels of detection – the first stores the time of the first event, the second of the last event
  • SOIC-16 package

These chips are about $5 at Digikey or Mouser.
